Emergency Preparedness Meeting

Last Thursday Oct 26 was the first official neighborhood meeting to discuss emergency preparedness. By all counts it was a success. It's great to know that our community takes this seriously.

Gail Marsh, City of Shoreline Emergency Management Coordinator; and Melanie Granfors, Community Education Specialist with the Shoreline Fire Department both presented information and we watched a short video about emergency preparedness.

Their message was clear and simple—in a large-scale emergency, do NOT expect police, fire, and ambulance services to be available. We should all be individually (and as households) prepared to sustain ourselves for 3 days. This means drinking water, food and possibly shelter. Please go to this page on the American Red Cross website for specific information about how to prepare. Three Days, Three Ways is another excellent site.

Individual and family preparedness are great steps toward disaster mitigation, but the real goal for us is a "Ready Neighborhood." Just as there are certain criteria to become a recognized Block Watch, established Block Watches can take a few extra steps to become a Ready Neighborhood too.

Expect more information to be posted here. In the meantime--get prepared and get to know your neighbors!

Block Party Schedule

This Saturday, September 9-- the 14th annual block party! The action will take place at the corner of 177th and Serpentine. The street will be closed to through traffic.

~12 Noon
Close the street and set up the tables and chairs. Always a good time to help out if you can!

Noon – 3pm
Set the tables and get the food and tents up. Sound system, BBQs, Ping Pong etc.

4pm
Party time! Bring pot luck if you like—desserts are always a favorite, salads even more so. Hair Painting and Sidewalk Chalk Art begin. Bicycles, skateboards, anything on wheels (without an engine) is welcome. New this year: Neighborhood Yard Exchange—bring toys, books, children’s clothes, plants, something you think someone else might be able to use (no furniture please)

5pm
BBQ is served. $3.50 gets you a plate, a beverage, and a ticket for the raffle. Burgers and condiments are served. Vegi burgers are always available.

5:30
Raffle and neighborhood announcements. We will take a few minutes to mention neighborhood emergency preparedness efforts. Block Watch information will also be available.

6:30
Let the Games begin. The traditional Tug-of-War (c’mon Southsiders, we need numbers!)
Water Balloon Toss, Bucket Brigade, and whatever other crazy stunts we can come up with. Be prepared for random acts of soaking.

8pm
It doesn’t really have to end, does it?

Block party set for September 9

177th Street will be closed to through trafic after 12:00 noon on Saturday, until the block party is closed at dusk, sometime after 8:00 PM.

This is the 14th year and we can always use some help. I will post again soon to provide more details. If you are interested in helping set up or clean up, please post a comment or send an email to me. (notermark ( at ) mac.com)

As always, we expect a good turnout, great weather and an awesome time. There will be Barbecue and Soda available for a nominal cost, along with potluck and desserts. Please bring a dish to share!

Meeting of May 18 2006

A few of us attended a meeting last week to discuss our neighborhood's emergency preparedness. We came away with a few goals:

Help raise neighborhood awareness of emergency preparedness (it rhymes!)

Coordinate a public meeting with the fire department

Order and distribute copies of this handbook, published by the WA Dept of Health and WA State Military Dept.

Establish a communication approach in emergencies

Encourage Search and Rescue training withinin the neighborhood via CERT

This is just a start, but a good one. Please use the comment space to update or add info regarding this meeting

Hi Neighbors!

This was a very simple format to create, and until something else comes along, I think will make an excellent way to stay "on the same page."

The first thing I want to emphasize is that this is a public site, and can be accessed by anyone. Comments made here may likely turn up in search engines, so let's be mindful of personal information. I recommend first name, last initial for references.

For now I will be the sole administrator/moderator of this site, and reserve the right to edit comments as appropriate. If you wish to start a new thread, please send me an email of the text. Likewise, if you strongly feel something should be removed, please let me know. There are many options to have this set up for team use in the future.

Typically, you must register with Blogger to make comments. I have set up the comments so anyone can make them without registering. There will be a word verification window to try to minimize comment spam. I will watch how succesful it is, and adjust settings as necessary.

This site has the potential to grow into a great community resource if we all treat it with respect and discretion. Most importantly, Let's USE IT! Thanks for being great neighbors!
